Throughout this year we have been able to develop a range of engaging and fun community initiatives thanks to funding received from the Soil Association, 'Food For Life'. The project also contributed to the installation of our new onsite polytunnel in our community garden, as well as garden equipment and other related developments on our site in respect of community growing! It has been a multi dimensional project and one we have been able to see some incredible results from!

After the success of our first Community Plant Swap in 2020, we were delighted to be able to run this again this year! We developed 5 plant swap tables and gave these away to be managed by the community, with the idea being that these would stay in circulation and the responsibility for managing these be rotated, generating community interest and support and also raising money for Outside Lives and other charities! We all know the nostalgia that comes from homemade pickles and jams, but given the increased range available in the shops and farm markets, these methods had all but died out. We wanted to see whether we could get people pickling and preserving at home with some simple recipes! Read more
We all know that sometimes bought items such as ketchup can contain a lot of nasties. We wanted to explore making some loved items and then taste testing and comparing against their shop bought alternatives. We wanted to see whether making these items was better then buying - or not! Read more
As part of our Food For Life focus, we explored the importance of growing our own vegetables, both for health and for wellbeing. We partnered with Rachel Farr from Cae Rhug Holistic Farm to answer people's growing questions to support new and more experienced growers to 'sew the seed' of growing at home - from planning through to harvest, and all the important questions in between! Throughout January 2021, members of the Outside Lives team took part in Veganuary, a campaign for people to follow a plant-based diet for the month. We talked about changes made, likes and dislikes and whether we'd continue after the end of the challenge - the results were great and lots of long term changes were made! Read more

The UK throws away around 9.5 million tonnes of food waste in a single year – even though 8.4 million people in the UK are in food poverty. Billions of pounds are wasted each year when food is disposed of unnecessarily. We feel passionate about preventing food waste and helping people to explore different ways of making recipes into new dishes, or simply making sure that nothing is wasted. Read more

In February 2020, we hosted our 'Come Dine With Me' event at Mold Rugby Club as part of our Food for Life support, provided by the Soil Association. The idea was that anyone who attended brought a couple of things with them; a plate of food to share and a willingness to chat! Read more
